In its bid to decentralise government services, the Attorney General Chambers will be opening brand-new offices for the Deeds and Commercial Registry in Mahdia, Linden and New Amsterdam.
Attorney General Anil Nandlall on Tuesday evening disclosed that the Mahdia, Region Eight office will be opened soon while the Linden, Region Ten office will be opened by the end of July.
This will mark the fulfilment of a promise made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali to have offices of the Deeds and Commercial Registry in all outlying regions, Nandlall said.
“All these persons would have ordinarily have to travel to Georgetown to conduct business with the Deeds and Commercial Registry and/or to access services of this important institution, they can now do so in their own region,” he noted.
The Deeds Registry is responsible for the matters relating to land titles, filing powers of attorney and deed poll for name changes, among other similar transactions. The commercial arm of the registry deals with company registrations, registration of businesses, incorporation of companies, registration of mortgages and more.
As it relates to New Amsterdam, Region Six, Nandlall noted that there is need to upgrade the environment occupied by that branch of the registry.
“Currently the Deeds and Commercial Registry occupy very cramped conditions beneath the High Court building which they share with the registry of the court. The conditions have become almost intolerable. I visited recently and there is hardly any space to walk, the documents that are stored there are large volumes and you don’t have space,” he explained.
The cost of that investment will be $767 million and the Attorney General said bids will be opened shortly to commence the process.
Meanwhile, Restorative Justice Centres are also being opened across the country to offer services to the various courts, and decentralise the much-needed support from Georgetown to outlying areas.
The Attorney General explained that these offices will be located in each region and provides employment to persons in those regions.
