The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport recently launched the President’s Youth Award Republic of Guyana (PYARG) Programme at St. Cuthbert’s Mission, bringing new opportunities for young people in the community to develop their skills, build confidence, serve their community and embrace healthy, active lifestyles.
The launch forms part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to expand access to structured youth development programmes, particularly in hinterland communities.
The PYARG programme was resuscitated in 2021 following a period of inactivity under the previous administration, and has since expanded significantly across Guyana. From 2021 to July 2026, 15,510 youths have been trained and participated in PYARG, demonstrating the programme’s growing reach and its importance as a platform for youth empowerment, leadership development and national development.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson MP provided an overview of the PYARG programme and highlighted its key components, including Skills Development, Community Service, Physical Training, and the Adventurous Journey, with young participants progressing through the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the expedition experience.
The programme will also provide opportunities for youths to participate in a range of sporting and recreational activities, including cricket, football, swimming, archery and volleyball. These activities are intended to promote teamwork, discipline, physical fitness, leadership and personal development.
A key feature of the launch was the identification of unit leaders and coaches/facilitators within the St. Cuthbert’s Mission community, who will work alongside the Ministry to implement and guide the programme at the local level. Their involvement reflects the Ministry’s commitment to empowering communities and utilising local capacity in advancing youth development.
Staff of the Department of Youth supported the Minister and the community during the launch, reinforcing the Department’s commitment to expanding meaningful opportunities for young Guyanese and ensuring that youth in hinterland communities are included in national youth development initiatives.
