T&T pledges staunch support for Guyana in any Venezuelan act of aggression

The Trinidad and Tobago Government has declared its strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Guyana.

In a statement on Saturday evening, the Office of the Prime Minister in Port-of-Spain said that no requests have ever been made by the American Government for their military assets to access Trinidadian territory for any military action against the Nicolas Maduro-led Venezuelan regime.

According to the missive, while T&T has always had good relations with the Venezuelan people, and this will continue, there will be full support in all efforts to defend Guyana’s territory.

“I want to make it very clear that if the Maduro regime launches
any attack against the Guyanese people or invades Guyanese territory and a
request is made by the American Government for access to Trinidadian
territory to defend the people of Guyana, my government will unflinchingly
provide them that access,” the Kamla Persad Bissessar administration declared.

This statement from the T&T Government comes as tensions rise between the United States and Venezuela over the US’ deployment of three warships and over 4,000 military troops off the coast of Venezuela as part of efforts to crack down on the drug trade in the region. The warships are expected to arrive sometime today.

Washington has stated that designated narco-terrorist organisations like Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles are using the region’s air and sea corridors to funnel drugs into the US, thus posing a direct threat to American lives and security.

Meanwhile, the T&T government says it fully supports the deployment of American Military assets to the region to tackle terrorist drug cartels, stating that the only persons who should be worried about the activity of the US military are those engaged in or enabling criminal activity.

The Guyana Government has already welcomed the US sending resources to the Caribbean region to clamp down on the illicit drug trade.

Only Saturday evening, President Dr Irfaan Ali highlighted the need for Guyana to have strong leadership as the region faces rising military tensions between the United States and Venezuela.

Ali, who is seeking a second term in office at the September 1 elections in Guyana, said only the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic has demonstrated the ability to lead the country with support from global partners to face regional security issues, such as illegal drug trafficking and threats to national security and territorial integrity.
