Ten vulnerable families across East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six) have received newly constructed homes under the Men on Mission (MoM) initiative, including an elderly couple who lost their house to fire and a stroke survivor now living in a home built for her needs.
Jerry, 68, and his 76-year-old wife Rosaline Alexander lost their home at Fourth Street, Swamp Section, to a devastating fire.
Through the Men on Mission initiative, the elderly couple have received a newly constructed home, giving them an opportunity to rebuild their lives after the loss.
in Letterkenny North, 53-year-old Dankumarie Balkarran, who also suffered a stroke, received a new home designed for safer, more comfortable living.
Fellow Letterkenny resident, 64-year-old Shivbachan Harrikishun, was also presented with a newly constructed home under the programme, while in Sisters Village, where Shamila Seetaram and Nazim Ganni became beneficiaries of fully furnished homes.
“I want to thank the president for this home,” expressed 59-year-old Totaram Narine of Chesney, Corentyne, after receiving his home on Friday.
Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, who handed over the homes on behalf of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, described the initiative as part of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) 2025 Manifesto commitments to deliver housing to vulnerable Guyanese.
“These homes are being built, furnished, and given to vulnerable groups at no cost. As I said, that in the PPP Civic Manifesto, when we went to elections in 2020 and 2025, this is part of the programme that we commit to the Guyanese people,” he said.
For the families, the interventions address circumstances that are deeply personal. Some have had to cope with serious health challenges, others with the responsibility of providing for children, while the Alexanders faced the difficult task of rebuilding after a fire destroyed their home.
The homes were provided through the Men on Mission initiative, which mobilises support for vulnerable families and communities through housing and other interventions. It is a brainchild of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who has committed to supporting persons in vulnerable situations. (DPI)
