Sophia and surrounding communities are benefiting from major road upgrades as the government continues to improve connectivity and create opportunities for residents.
Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill made that disclosure on Saturday at the handing-over ceremony for the new ‘E’ Field Sophia Market tarmac.
The tarmac was constructed to accommodate vendors affected by ongoing road expansion works.
“Sophia is on a major, major upgrade and infrastructure development and as those developments take place, everybody will get a chance to improve themselves and that is what President Ali and the government is seeking to do,” he said.
Among the major projects is the reconstruction and expansion of the roads running parallel to the University of Guyana (UG).
“Right now, at UG Road, we are putting in a four-lane road. Two on this side of the trench and two on the other side of the trench. Dennis Street is becoming a four-lane road,” he said.
The approximately 900-metre roadway connecting UG Road to Sophia had deteriorated significantly over the years.
A $275 million contract was awarded in December 2025 for its reconstruction, with the project initially expected to be completed within eight months.
Works commenced in January 2026 as part of the wider effort to improve road infrastructure and connectivity in the area.
The minister said residents in several other communities had received similar assurances as infrastructure projects were rolled out.
“I told the people in Aubrey Barker the same thing. I told the people in Buxton the same thing,” he said.
He further noted that despite opposition from some quarters, infrastructure development was delivering tangible improvements in communities across the country.
Meanwhile, the upgrades in Sophia form part of the government’s wider programme to expand and modernise the country’s road network, while creating safer and more efficient routes for residents and businesses. (DPI)
