An on-duty Police Corporal, attached to the Traffic Department in Regional Police Division #3 (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), is currently hospitalised after the motorcycle he was on was struck by a motorcar earlier today.
The incident occurred at around 12:03 hours on Hague Public Road, West Coast Demerara. At the time, the officer was on a Guyana Police Force (GPF) motorcycle, #CR 6252.
Preliminary investigations revealed that motorcar #PPP 758 was stationary on the northern side of the roadway, facing east, when the driver reportedly made a U-turn across the road and collided with the GPF motorcycle, which was proceeding east along the northern side of Hague Public Road.
As a result of the collision, the police officer was flung off the bike and over the motor car, before falling onto the roadway, where he sustained injuries about his body.
He was picked up by public-spirited persons in a conscious condition and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty. The injured cop was later transferred to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital for further medical attention.
A breathalyser test was conducted on the motorcar driver, a 39-year-old man of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, and no trace of alcohol was detected.
Nevertheless, he is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Investigations are ongoing.
