The Regional Democratic Council Barima/Waini, Region One, is strengthening healthcare in the region, with bids invited for the construction of two new health facilities valued at a combined $37.8 million.
The projects fall under the region’s capital programme and include constructing a health post at Smith Creek at $15.8 million and a prefabricated health hut at Four Miles, Matarkai, estimated at $22 million.
These investments complement the existing infrastructure and are also expected to expand access to healthcare services for residents in these communities, particularly those in hinterland and remote areas.
In May 2026, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony commissioned a new digital X-ray unit at the Pakera District Hospital, further strengthening diagnostic capabilities within the region and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for critical imaging services.
Additionally, Wanakai and Tobago saw the commissioning of new health posts, improving access to routine check-ups, maternal and child healthcare, vaccinations, treatment for common illnesses, and emergency medical attention.
Diagnostic services across the region continue to expand with investments in digital imaging technology and upgraded medical equipment at healthcare facilities.
Meanwhile, eligible and qualified contractors are invited to submit bids through the National Competitive Bidding (NCB) process in accordance with the Procurement Act 2003 and National Procurement and Tender Administration Board regulations.
Bids for the projects are scheduled to be opened at 9:00 hours on Tuesday, September 17, 2026, at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board, Ministry of Finance, Georgetown.
