Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Wednesday extended congratulations to the United National Congress (UNC) for emerging victorious at the recently concluded elections in Trinidad and Tobago. Further, he lauded the People’s National Movement (PNM) for conceding as soon as the results were available.
“What was so appealing to me about the elections there is that I saw a video of former [TT] Prime Ministers Keith Rowley and Stuart Young standing up at their party’s headquarter…on election night and before the elections commission in Trinidad issued preliminary results, said we are conceding, we lost the elections,” Jagdeo highlighted.
Trinidad and Tobago citizens went to the polls on Monday, April 28, 2025. Subsequently, the Elections and Boundaries Commission reported that the UNC secured 26 of the 41 constituencies while the PNM secured 13, and the Tobago People’s Party secured 2. The Commission reported that there was an approximately 54% voter turnout from the total registered electorate of 1,153,850 across 41 electoral districts.
The PNM which has been in office since 2015, said it will work hard in the future to contest the next elections.
Jagdeo, who is also the General Secretary of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP), said “that is the maturity that differentiates their politics from ours and I wish that it could be the same here in Guyana.”
He referred to the 2020 General and Regional Elections in Guyana which was marred by protests, litigations, international interventions and a prolonged recount after the then APNU+AFC Government refused to concede defeat.
“They were squatting in Government [for five months] spending a lot of money and then lying to the people,” he recalled.
The VP added that the APNU+AFC “have no class, no dignity, no love for the country…they’re just too greedy as we’ve seen in their negotiations on how they will share positions.”
Guyana is slated to host general elections this year.
The PPP has already announced that Dr. Irfaan Ali will be running for a second term in office.
