Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips, last evening joined Ambassador of the Unit Mexican States to Guyana, H.E. Mauricio Vizcaíno Crespo, at a reception to commemorate the 216th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence.
Prime Minister Phillips extended heartfelt congratulations to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the Government and people of Mexico on the national occasion.
During his remarks, the Prime Minister reflected on the principles of liberty, democracy and freedom that have guided Mexico’s development since the beginning of its independence movement more than two centuries ago. He also recognised the sacrifices and achievements of generations of Mexicans in shaping the culturally rich, resilient, and industrialised nation that Mexico is today.
Prime Minister Phillips commended Mexico’s economic development and its growing role within the region and internationally, noting its emergence as a major industrial and trading nation.
He highlighted Mexico’s strengths in manufacturing, energy and agriculture and welcomed continued collaboration in these areas as Guyana pursues its own development priorities and seeks to benefit from Mexico’s experience and expertise.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged Mexico’s longstanding diplomatic traditions and its commitment to peaceful dispute resolution, multilateralism, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, principles which he noted are equally important to Guyana’s foreign policy and diplomatic engagement.
Reflecting on more than five decades of relations between the two countries, Prime Minister Phillips underscored the enduring friendship between Guyana and Mexico, which has been strengthened over the years by mutual respect, shared values, common interests and a commitment to cooperation and dialogue.
“As Guyana continues on its transformative development trajectory, we value the friendship and support of partners such as Mexico. Our countries have complementary strengths that can create significant opportunities for expanded mutual benefit.”
Against this backdrop, the Prime Minister pointed to Mexico’s established expertise in manufacturing, agriculture, engineering, logistics, innovation and technology as areas which complement Guyana’s expanding economy and development agenda.
He welcomed opportunities for closer economic engagement between the two countries, including increased participation by Mexican enterprises and investors in Guyana, while encouraging stronger commercial linkages that can create mutually beneficial opportunities for businesses and citizens in both countries.
Prime Minister Phillips also highlighted the role of the Mexico–Guyana Chamber of Commerce in advancing economic relations. He noted that, “Its initiatives are paving the way for partnerships, encouraging dialogue, and transforming goodwill into concrete economic opportunities that will inure to the benefit of our citizens.”
Beyond economic engagement, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Guyana’s appreciation for Mexico’s contribution to human-capital development, particularly through Spanish-language and diplomatic training, technical assistance and educational scholarships. He noted that these initiatives have created opportunities for Guyanese while strengthening skills, knowledge sharing and the people-to-people ties that continue to deepen relations between the two countries.
Looking ahead, Prime Minister Phillips expressed confidence in the continued advancement of bilateral relations and reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to deepening cooperation and broadening opportunities for the mutual benefit of both countries.
“Guyana remains optimistic about the future, and confident that our two countries will continue to deepen cooperation, broaden opportunities for our citizens, and work together to advance prosperity, sustainable development, and regional progress.”
Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, who was performing the duties of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Foreign Secretary Mr Robert Persaud; members of the diplomatic community; members of the Mexican community in Guyana; Government officials were also in attendance.
