The Ministry of Education has introduced a new digital reporting platform designed to strengthen the monitoring and resolution of issues affecting schools across Guyana.
The platform was launched on Thursday under the leadership of Minister of Education Sonia Parag.
It will be available to every school and is intended to provide a centralised system through which headteachers, principals and teachers in charge could formally report issues requiring attention.
Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain said the platform was developed to give the ministry greater visibility of issues across the country’s schools and facilitate faster intervention.
“I am very, very happy this afternoon to share with you an app that has been developed by the Ministry of Education under the instructions of the Honourable Minister of Education Sonia Parag, which will attempt to collect all the issues around schools and resolve them very, very quickly,” Hussain explained.
The system requires school officials to access the platform using their official school email address. After this, a verification code is sent to their email.
Users can then select their region and school before submitting the issue’s details.
Reports can cover a range of concerns, including water and sanitation, and users are required to provide a description of the problem and indicate its level of urgency.
Photographs can also be uploaded to provide visual evidence of the issue.
Before submission, users are presented with a summary of the report for verification. Once submitted, the complaint is automatically transmitted to the respective District Education Officer, Regional Education Officer, Regional Executive Officer, and the Ministry of Education.
The ministry has also assigned four officers to monitor the reports and maintain communication with the regions to determine whether reported issues have been addressed.
According to Hussain, the platform will soon become mandatory in the education system, with the Ministry expected to issue a circular formalising its use by school officials.
He stressed that the effectiveness of the system depends on schools consistently using the platform to report concerns.
“We cannot fix issues which we do not know about. We have to be told, and so we should be able to fix those issues once we are told,” the Chief Education Officer said.
The new mechanism forms part of the ministry’s efforts to improve accountability, communication and responsiveness within the education sector, while ensuring that issues affecting the learning environment are identified and channelled to the appropriate authorities for action. [DPI]
