Detectives in Regional Division 4B (East Bank Demerara) have launched an investigation following the discovery of a 9mm pistol and eight rounds of ammunition concealed in bushes near the Sage Pond Police Outpost.

The discovery followed an incident on Friday, August 28, 2026, at about 23:20 hours, when ranks on a police operation received information that a gold coloured 41 Zone minibus travelling along the Heroes Highway was allegedly transporting illegal items.

The ranks proceeded to the highway and intercepted the minibus in the vicinity of Forrester Place along the dumpsite road. The driver and approximately 25 occupants, including males, females and children, were escorted to the Sage Pond Police Outpost, where searches were conducted.

No illegal items were found during the search of the minibus or its occupants. Some female occupants were subsequently permitted to use a washroom at the rear of the outpost before the vehicle and occupants were allowed to leave.

Police later received information that a firearm was allegedly thrown into the area behind the outpost by a Guyanese female, who appeared to be pregnant and had earlier requested to use the washroom.

At about 00:23 hours on August 29, police ranks conducted a search of the area and discovered a black Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol with serial number intact concealed in bushes approximately two to three feet from the outpost.

The firearm was found with a magazine containing eight live hollow-point rounds of ammunition.

The scene was processed and photographed by crime scene ranks.

The firearm, magazine and ammunition were marked, sealed and lodged as investigations continue.
