OPR probing death of WCD man at Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station

𝑶𝑷𝑹 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒔 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒕 𝑽𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒅-𝒆𝒏-𝑯𝒐𝒐𝒑 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑳𝒐𝒄𝒌𝒖𝒑𝒔

The Office of Professional Responsibility has commenced an investigation into the death of Gavin Kennard Douglas, 32, a labourer of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, which occurred on Saturday October 31, 2026, following an incident at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station.

Douglas was arrested on Saturday October 31, 2026, in connection with an alleged Robbery Under Arms which occurred on Wednesday October 28, 2026, at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.

Initial enquiries revealed that Douglas was escorted to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station at approximately 11:36hrs. About 12:00hrs, while being placed into the lockups, he became aggressive and resisted police ranks.

Douglas was subsequently restrained and placed into the lockups.

At approximately 12:45hrs, Douglas was observed frothing at the mouth during a check of the lockups. He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he died while receiving medical attention at approximately.

The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated.

Investigations are ongoing.
