On Sunday, Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, accompanied by Minister within the Ministry, the Vanessa Benn, visited the Hauraruni Housing Development site along the Soesdyke Highway.
The project, which commenced during the previous term, is earmarked for the construction of over 400 Young Professional houses. Land preparation has largely been completed, while work on internal roads and drains is ongoing. The first phase of infrastructure is expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.
Minister Croal explained that the move to the Soesdyke corridor comes as demand for land in Region Four continues to outpace supply on the East Coast and East Bank. “We are shifting occupancy into new areas along the highway to meet the needs of applicants,” he noted.
The Ministry will soon invite expressions of interest for contractors to participate in the housing drive, with both local and international companies expected to play a role. Prices for the houses will be set at the governmental level to ensure affordability.
Minister Benn, who also toured the site, highlighted that the development is part of the broader mandate of the Ministry and the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA), which includes clearing the backlog of applications, advancing Silica City, and accelerating housing construction nationwide.
The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to delivering on the government’s housing agenda, pointing to the Hararuni development as a key step in expanding access to modern, affordable housing for Guyanese families.
