The new $880 million Charity Market Multipurpose Wharf along the Pomeroon River in Region Two is now 30 per cent complete.
The upgrade is being undertaken by S Jagmohan Construction and General Supplies Inc to replace the dilapidated port facility.
According to the Ministry of Public Works on Friday, the project falls under the ministry’s waterfront development programme and has made significant structural advancements.
Substantial progress has been made on the core infrastructure, with the reinforced concrete jetty section of the wharf now largely completed.
The contractor is presently preparing to cast the remaining four-inch concrete top-up slab to finalise the jetty deck.
Simultaneously, work has progressed on the next critical phase, with the driving of precast concrete piles for the jetty head section of the wharf structure currently underway.
The construction team has successfully driven fifty-three precast concrete piles to date.
In an effort to maintain momentum and clear the footprint for subsequent structural developments, the contractor is scheduled to begin demolishing a private wharf previously constructed within the designated work site.
Moreover, Charity Wharf has been an essential hub for moving goods and commerce in the Essequibo region.
The construction of the new concrete wharf with a frontage of approximately 140 feet will feature a floating link-span bridge and dock, allowing docking of much larger vessels than the current structure can accommodate.
Meanwhile, the ministry has begun constructing a steel sheet pile revetment along the Pomeroon riverbank at Charity.
The first phase of the project will be the construction of 300 metres of steel-sheet-pile revetment along two sections of the Charity waterfront.
Section one runs adjacent to the Charity Cemetery, and Section two, adjacent to the Charity Market Multipurpose Wharf site.
These developments aim to improve water transportation and boost trade for people living in and around the area. [DPI]
