Under the APNU+AFC administration, the Mabaruma Regional Hospital only conducted 15 surgeries while the Moruca District Hospital was unable to any perform surgeries.

Today, after less than five years of strategic investments by the PPP administration, both hospitals – located in Region One (Barima-Waini) – have successfully conducted hundreds of operations, collectively.

This success was highlighted by President Dr Irfaan Ali on Monday as he addressed a large gathering of indigenous leaders from across the country at this year’s National Toshaos’ Council (NTC) Conference.

He noted that for the entire period between 2015 to 2019, there were 15 surgeries conducted at the Maburauma Regional Hospital.

“In the last year alone at this hospital, we had 570 surgeries…these are the facts, this is the reality,” the Head of State highlighted.

At Moruca District Hospital between 2015 and 2020, there were zero surgeries, the President pointed out. “With the investment we have made, today, we have had 85 elective surgeries at this hospital in 2024 alone,” he noted.

Another remarkable achievement for the region, the President outlined, is that under APNU+AFC, about 99% of all pregnancies with complications had to be referred outside of Region One.

“Today, in 2024 because of the investment we have made in healthcare in Region One, we had zero referrals out of the region,” he remarked.

The President explained that this is because of his government’s investment in neonatal services and the overall delivery of healthcare in hinterland regions.

“Between 2015 and 2020, more than 15% of the patients, even if they need extra ultrasound, sometimes had to be medivacked out of the region. In 2024 because of the investment, we made in healthcare in Region One, less than 1% medivac was needed. This is the qualitative changes between the period 2020 and 2025,” he explained.

The President also noted that in Region One, his government has invested in more than 16 ATVs, six ambulances, pickups, mini busses, motorbikes and more than 25 boats and engines – for the enhanced delivery of healthcare to citizens there.

“That is the investment in healthcare to move patients, to move health workers alone in Region One,” he noted.

On the matter of drugs and medical supplies, President Ali said between 2015 to 2019, the availability in Region One was less than 30%. Today, between the period 2021 and 2024, the government recorded a more than 95% of drugs and medical supplies availability.
