WIN leader denies using jaguar as party symbol; claims cat is a leopard

US-sanctioned businessman and founder of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed, says that the symbol he submitted to be used for the upcoming elections was not a jaguar but that of another cat, a leopard.

In a comment to Demerara Waves Online News earlier this evening, Mohamed claimed that symbol submitted to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for approval to be used on the ballot is not a jaguar.

“The symbol is not a jaguar. The symbol is another cat because the symbol that we submitted to GECOM, if you Google the image, it’s not a jaguar. It’s another species of a cat. It was a leopard,” the WIN Leader told Demerara Waves.

Mohamed’s claim comes after GECOM’s Chairperson, Ret’d Justice Claudette Singh, on Friday ruled that the use of the jaguar, an element of the national Coat of Arms, by any political party is impermissible, reaffirming the symbol’s status as a representation of national unity rather than partisan alignment.

There was much public outrage over WIN’s use of the jaguar, which is Guyana’s national animal and appears on the country’s Coat of Arm, as a political symbol.

In fact, even the indigenous community had objected to its use, with the chair of the National Toshaos Council (NTC) writing the Elections Commission to express concerns.

Mohamed has since threatened to take legal actions against GECOM if it refuses to rescind its rejection of the party’s symbol.

Interestingly, however, leopards are not among the six big cats that are found in Guyana.
