The community of Kwebanna in the Barima-Waini administrative region has been catapulted into a progressive and developing Amerindian community.

This was the view shared by Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill during a community meeting in the village on Wednesday.

Already, the President Dr Irfaan Ali-led government has expended more than $2.4 billion on developmental works for the community, empowering it for social and economic upliftment.

“When you look at where Kwebanna was…and where it is in 2025, I think all of us will be able to say ‘Thank God, Kwebanna is on the rise’,” the minister said.

He revealed to the people that the upgrade to the wharf, the revetment work at the waterfront, and the transformation of the main walkway from mud to concrete will be completed once the PPP/C remains in office.

Minister Edghill reminded the residents that it was the PPP/C who advocated for their development in opposition and worked consistently to supply them with developmental opportunities while in government.

“The PPP/C, whether in opposition or in government, has never, ever turned its back on its back on Kwebanna,” he noted.

Further, the public works minister lambasted the then APNU/AFC administration for neglecting the needs of the Amerindian communities, going as far as describing them as “avaricious”.

He said that his government has a starkly contrasting view which has informed how they have considered development for the indigenous peoples.

“We don’t share the view that Amerindians are greedy. We share the view that Amerindians are deserving of development and prosperity like every other people across this country,” he pointed out.

To ensure that residents of Kwebanna live a more comfortable life, some 100 black tanks are already en route to the Region One community.
