Prime Minister Mark Phillips, who is returning as the prime ministerial candidate for the People’s Progressive Party, has expressed that “we want a leader who can be invited into the White House”.
He made the remark during the party’s campaign launch at the Kitty Market Square.
The comment was a jab at presidential hopeful Azruddin Mohamed, who is sanctioned by the United States.
Meanwhile, noting that the PPP wants a stronger representation in parliament, the PM urged supporters to start checking the voters list to ensure their names and that of their families and friends are included.
PM Phillips emphasised that a vote for the PPP is a vote for continued development.
He also responded to Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton who said young people tend not to be involved in politics.
“You see here today a demonstration of youths in leadership,” the PM referring to the scores of young persons who have endorsed the PPP.
“Who say youths aren’t interested in politics?…The PPP is led by youths…Don’t listen to these people,” the PM said.
Additionally, the PM noted that the PPP believes in diversity and inclusivity.
“This is a national party, a multiethnic party, all the people are here, all the people are included,” he said.
Moreover, the PM urged supporters to remember the recent past, five years ago, when they voted for the PPP and certain elements “prevented us from taking office for five months”.
Pointing to the massive development that has taken place over the past five years even with challenges such as COVID-19 and countrywide floods, PM Phillips said “just imagine what we will do in the next five years”.
