President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has held talks with United States (US) Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, on expanding American investment in Guyana.
The talks cover oil and gas exploration, infrastructure, agriculture, housing, and technology.
The meeting took place in Washington, D.C on Wednesday, the president said in a Facebook post.
According to the head of state, Secretary Lutnick reaffirmed the United States’ “strong interest in continued investment in Guyana,” and its recognition of the country “as a valued partner for growth and prosperity in the Americas.”
The two leaders discussed renewed oil and gas exploration, infrastructure, development and improved connectivity.
President Ali said these areas would “position Guyana as a gateway for trade and commerce with the wider South American continent.”
Investment in agriculture and housing was also on the agenda, with the president noting that US expertise could help “create jobs, strengthen food security and expand opportunities for Guyanese families.”
The talks further examined US support for developing Guyana into a regional data centre hub and advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and technology.
President Ali said this would create opportunities for Guyanese professionals and businesses while “positioning our country as a major player in the hemisphere’s digital economy.”
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to long-term investment, economic diversification and sustainable prosperity for Guyana and the wider region,” President Ali stated. [DPI]
