See full statement from the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC):
The GFC reminds drivers of logging trucks and all other modes of transport used to convey forest produce on public and private roads, and waterways, that extreme care and precaution must be taken while traversing the respective routes.
Additionally, all drivers of vehicles transporting forest produce must exercise extra caution when travelling at night.
Further, it has been observed that some modes of transport are transporting excessive pieces/volume of both logs and lumber. This practice is very dangerous and contributes to the deterioration of the road/waterways.
At the very minimum, the GFC is reminding drivers of all modes of forest transport to adhere to the following guidelines, in addition to also being compliant with the normal traffic regulations:
- All forms of transportation vehicles or vessels must be fully functional, and certified by the relevant Government Agencies
- Persons operating the different modes of transport are fully certified and properly trained in the use of these forms of transport, inclusive of all safety measures
- Safety measures to be properly implemented at all times, include:
1. Persons are not permitted to be on top of the forest produce being transported
2. Persons are not allowed to be on the tray of the vehicle transporting forest produce
3. All vehicles transporting forest produce must have a triangular reflector prominently displayed at the extreme end of the forest produce being transported at all times
4. All vehicles transporting forest produce must have at least two (2) traffic cones which are to be placed at the front and back of the vehicle transporting forest produce, in the event of the vehicle having to be parked on the roadway
5. All forest produce being transported must be in compliance with the designated weight limits
6. All forest produce must be properly secured with a minimum of three (3) straps, appropriate steel stanchions and rails, and must be transported in a safe and adequate manner to prevent shifting or dislodgement.
GFC advises that non-compliance with the above measures will not be tolerated and be dealt with the full force of the law.
