Guyana to participate in World Urban Forum in Baku

Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, met last evening with Elkin Velasquez, Director of UN-Habitat for Latin America and the Caribbean, at Herdmanston Lodge.

Also present at the engagement were, Permanent Secretary-MOH, Mr. Bishram Kuppen, Director of Operations- CH&PA, Mrs. Denise King-Tudor, Chief Development Planner, Ms. Germene Stewart, Community Development Director. Mr. Gladwin Charles and Deputy Director of Projects, Intakab Indarjeet.

The discussions centred on strengthening collaboration in the housing and urban development sector.

A key part of the dialogue was the ongoing partnership between the Ministry and UN-Habitat on the Guyana Strategy for Informal Settlement Upgrade and Prevention (GSISUP). This initiative aims to improve living standards, promote sustainable communities, and foster inclusive urban development across Guyana.

Minister Croal reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to expanding access to adequate housing, enhancing infrastructure, and ensuring organised community development. He also highlighted several areas for growth within the housing sector. He emphasised the importance of strategic partnerships with international organisations like UN-Habitat in supporting national development objectives.

Meanwhile to further support this agenda, Guyana will be represented at the World Urban Forum (WUF13) will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from May 17-22, 2026.
