The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has recommended that charges be laid against the two suspects in police custody over the fatal stabbing of 26-year-old Orlando Jonas of Number One Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

This was announced by the Guyana Police Force.

Initial reports indicated that Jonas and Mahendra Ramnarine, 18, were riding a bicycle, and in the vicinity of a popular shop in the area, they were confronted and attacked by two men who attempted to relieve them of their personal items.

Jonas was stabbed to death while Ramnarine was slashed to his face.

Following the incident, which occurred on Saturday last, the two “suspects” turned up at the Albion Police Station claiming that they were attacked and robbed. They were arrested.

But one of the suspects, who confessed to the crime, claimed that he acted in self-defense.

Nevertheless, after the file was sent to the DPP for legal advice. The Office of the DPP has since recommended that charges be laid against both suspects.

Protests had erupted in the Corentyne over the murder of Jonas. Family, friends and residents were calling for justice to be served.
