A fire of so far unknown origin this afternoon destroyed five buildings at James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, leaving some 30 persons including children homeless and millions of dollars in losses.
Divisional Fire Officer Otis Charles said when the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) received the report of the fire, six appliances responded.
He noted that upon arriving at the scene, a building was already fully engulfed in flames.
“When we arrived, one building was fully engulfed in flames, and another was already starting to catch. So, we immediately got into firefighting mode,” the fire officer said.
Residents reported that the fire was first observed at around 15:00hrs and the GFS took about 30 minutes before they arrived at the scene.
Among the buildings affected are two apartments and a meat shop. One of the apartments was occupied by a single mother and her three children.
This is a developing story…
