Bharrat Jaikarran, 45, has been remanded to prison for the brutal murder of his six-year-old son, Orlando Jaikarran.
The father, a cane harvester of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Shareefah Parks at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court today where he was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
He was remanded to prison and the matter transferred to the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court for November 12.
The prosecution informed the court that the investigation remains ongoing, with another suspect in police custody assisting with the probe.
On Tuesday, Orlando’s decomposed and headless body was recovered from the Waterloo Main Canal, West Coast Berbice – five days after he was reported missing from his Bath home.
The child’s father and another man, reportedly a pujari, were identified as prime suspects in the investigation.
Police had indicated to the media that preliminary investigations suggested the child had been taken to the canal, where he was allegedly chopped in the neck with a cutlass. The incident reportedly occurred on October 15, the same day Orlando was reported missing.
