In a matter of weeks, students from Region Two who wish to pursue engineering studies at the University of Guyana will be able to do so from right within the Pomeroon-Supenaam district.
On Wednesday, Education Minister, Sonia Parag and Presidential Advisor on Education, Dr. Kofi Dalrymple led a site visit to the Essequibo Technical Institute to examine and identify suitable spaces to accommodate both classrooms and the practical components of UG’s engineering curriculum.
The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the University of Guyana (UG), announced the new initiative to expand access to higher education, with a particular focus on students who were not admitted to the main UG campus due to space constraints.
This fulfills a commitment made by President Irfaan Ali, having recognized the large number of applicants that UG has had since it became free.
Consequently, President Ali has instructed that both medical and engineering studies be decentralized, commencing with Regions Two, Three and Five, where the number of applications are high, but cannot be physically accommodated at the UG campuses.
Some of the classes will run simultaneously with the UG main campus, while some others will be determined by the on-site lecturers in Region Two.
Both Minister Parag and Dr. Dalrymple were pleased with the spaces at ETI, which also has a physics and a chemistry lab.
To this end, Minister Parag is hopeful that the programmes can be rolled out from mid October.
