The National Toshaos Council (NTC) representing over 250 Indigenous leaders, at the conclusion of its 2026 Annual National Toshaos Council Conference, expresses its profound sorrow and extends its deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, and communities of those who tragically lost their lives in the recent MV Barima tragedy.
This heartbreaking incident, which represents the single largest loss of life in Guyana’s history since Independence, has plunged our nation into mourning. We join all Guyanese in grieving this unimaginable tragedy and stand in solidarity with every family whose lives have been forever changed.
The National Toshaos Council acknowledges the declaration by His Excellency, the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, of three days of national mourning. Throughout the Conference, Toshaos from across the country have observed this period with solemnity and compassion. Dedicated prayer sessions were held during the Conference, where Toshaos collectively offered prayers for the souls of those who perished, words of comfort for the bereaved families, strength for the survivors, and healing for our nation during this difficult time.
The NTC commends the emergency responders, medical personnel, members of the disciplined services, volunteers, Our President Honourable Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Our Prime Minister Honourable Retired Brigadier Mark Phillips, other members of cabinet and all those who worked tirelessly in the rescue, recovery, and support efforts. Their courage, dedication, and selfless service have been a source of comfort in the face of immense tragedy.
The National Toshaos Council calls on the Government of Guyana to leave no stone unturned in conducting a comprehensive, transparent, and independent review of every aspect of this incident. Such a review must examine not only the immediate circumstances surrounding the tragedy but also the broader systems, policies, regulatory frameworks, operational procedures, and safety protocols governing maritime transportation to ensure that lessons are learned and meaningful reforms are implemented to prevent such a catastrophe from ever occurring again.
The Council further urges that every necessary measure be taken to provide comprehensive support to the affected families and survivors. This support should extend beyond the immediate aftermath of the tragedy and include sustained long-term assistance, including psychosocial care, financial and social support where appropriate, educational assistance for affected children, and any other interventions necessary to help families and survivors rebuild their lives with dignity.
As leaders of Guyana’s Indigenous communities, the Toshaos reaffirm their commitment to standing with the affected families in their time of grief. We pray that they may find strength, comfort, and hope in the love and support of the nation, and we encourage all Guyanese to continue demonstrating compassion, unity, and solidarity as we mourn together.
May the souls of those who have departed rest in eternal peace, and may God continue to bless and strengthen the families they leave behind, the survivors, and our beloved nation.
