While there is currently no Value Added Tax (VAT) on female sanitary products, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has clarified that the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) administration will be moving to also remove the common external tariffs on these and other categories of sanitary products.
Recently, President Dr Irfaan Ali had announced that the PPP/C will be removing all taxes on sanitary supplies. But some sections later pointed out that VAT on sanitary napkins and panty liners were already removed.
During his press conference today, Jagdeo was asked to clarify the matter. In response, he explained that while female sanitary supplies are VAT-free, tariffs are still applied to the products.
To remove those tariffs, the Guyana Government would have to engage the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Jagdeo explained.
Additionally, he noted that the commodities that will be impacted by this measure will include all types of sanitary products including diapers for babies and pensioners.
