Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, on Tuesday announced that the government will institute measures targeting persons with outstanding traffic tickets.
Speaking during his programme “Issues in the News”, he said persons with unpaid traffic tickets will not be able to renew their driver’s licence while the revenue licence and certificate of fitness relating to the vehicle identified in the offence, will not be renewed.
Nandlall said these measures are necessary given the large number of unpaid traffic tickets in the system.
He said based on statistics provided by the Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force, some 88,332 tickets were issued for the year so far, of which 44 per cent remain unpaid.
The Attorney General explained that the government is working to expand the range of traffic offences for which tickets can be issued, with the aim of reducing unnecessary detentions of drivers and their vehicles. However, he stressed the importance of citizens honouring their obligations by paying outstanding traffic tickets.
“So unpaid tickets will not go without consequences,” Nandlall asserted.
