Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips met with India’s Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, along with senior officials from the ministry earlier today in India.
Discussions focused on continued collaboration in renewable energy—specifically in the areas of wind, solar, and hydro power.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Phillips and Minister Joshi discussed India’s commitment to supporting renewable energy initiatives in the Caribbean. One of the initiatives includes providing solar power to a government building in Guyana, with plans to replicate the project across multiple Caribbean nations.
Both parties also expressed interest in renewing the expired Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on New and Renewable Energy, previously signed with Guyana’s Ministry of Public Works.
Prime Minister Phillips emphasised that Guyana values India as a key development partner across all sectors. Additionally, the Prime Minister, who was joined by Guyana’s High Commissioner to India, Mr Dharamkumar Seeraj, acknowledged the success of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, which has significantly benefited various sectors in Guyana, including the rice industry.
Minister Joshi also extended gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during his visit to Guyana. He further expressed appreciation for the Government of Guyana’s decision to confer Prime Minister Modi with Guyana’s highest national honour.
Guyana’s Deputy High Commissioner to India, Mrs Ronalda Edwards-Horatio, was also present at the meeting.
