$60M investment boosts healthcare delivery in Manawarin with new health centre, staff living quarters

Healthcare access in Manawarin, Region Two, has been enhanced with a new $30 million health centre

The Ministry of Health has commissioned a new GY$30 million health centre and completed a GY$30 million staff living quarters at Red Hill, Manawarin, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), representing a total Government investment of GY$60 million to strengthen healthcare delivery in the indigenous community.

The investment will improve access to quality healthcare for approximately 500 residents of Manawarin and surrounding areas, while providing accommodation to support the retention and comfort of healthcare workers serving the community.

During a tour of the newly commissioned facilities, the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, underscored the Government’s commitment to delivering modern, accessible healthcare services to rural and riverine communities through sustained investments in health infrastructure.

Designed with resilience in mind, the health centre has been elevated to protect it from flooding during periods of high water due to its proximity to the river, ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services throughout the year.

The new facility offers a comfortable patient experience, featuring a spacious waiting area and separate male and female washroom facilities to improve convenience and accessibility.

The facility also features a telemedicine system, which links healthcare workers in Manawarin with doctors and specialists at regional hospitals and the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Equipped with devices to monitor blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation and other vital signs, the system enables real-time clinical consultations, enhancing the quality of care available within the community.

Residents will also benefit from a fully stocked pharmacy that provides essential medications for the treatment of common illnesses while supporting the ongoing management of chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

In support of maternal and child health, the facility includes a dedicated Maternal and Child Health Room equipped with infant weighing scales and a length board for routine growth monitoring. Trained healthcare workers will conduct regular assessments to promote healthy childhood development and improve health outcomes.

The health centre also features a general examination room for general outpatient consultations and clinical assessments, along with an observation bed for individuals requiring short-term monitoring before discharge or referral. Additional amenities include a kitchenette for staff and vaccine storage facilities to ensure the continued delivery of immunisation services.

The newly completed staff living quarters will provide safe, comfortable accommodation for healthcare personnel, supporting the Ministry’s efforts to attract and retain health workers in remote communities while ensuring the continuous delivery of essential health services.

To further strengthen healthcare delivery, the Ministry of Health plans to construct a jetty and boathouse at the facility. The health centre will also be equipped with a boat and outboard engine, enabling healthcare workers to conduct home visits and expand outreach services to neighbouring riverine communities.

Minister Anthony noted that the GY$60 million investment in the Manawarin Health Centre and staff living quarters reflects the Government’s continued commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across Guyana and ensuring that residents riverine communities have access to comprehensive, high-quality healthcare services.
