The Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) today issued a notice, advising citizens that parking on pavements within the city is strictly prohibited.
“Citizens are reminded that pavements are intended for pedestrian use, including persons with disabilities, children and the elderly, and such parking is considered an obstruction and a hazard, forcing them to walk on busy roads,” the council said.
It reminded that the Municipal and District Councils Act, Chapter 28:01, Sections 9 and 10 state “it shall not be lawful for any person to ride or lead any animal or ride or wheel a bicycle or drive a vehicle or push any hand-truck, wheelbarrow or other vehicle other than a perambulator containing a child along a pavement or footpath …on the pavement or footpath and no person shall leave, place, or store or cause to be left placed, or stored any vehicle, cart, dray, barrel, box, dustbin, tree trunk…or other thing upon any street, parapet, or pavement with any vehicle, art, vehicle, cart, dray, barrel, box, dust-bin or other thing.”
As such, City Hall is urging the public’s cooperation in adhering to the law by parking in a manner that is safe for both vehicle owners and other groups of users.
Last year, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo had announced government’s intention to create some 10,000 parking spaces across Georgetown.
