Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has noted that the investment in more parking spaces countrywide is vital as the economy grows.
“That’s why we’re building these government facilities where you can go park for a fee if you’re a businessman and you have trucks and heavy-duty equipment, etc. You can’t be parking them by the roadside,” he noted during his press conference on Thursday.
Jagdeo said the government is also working on a parking solution for the ordinary people, especially in Georgetown.
“In the city, we’re going to be focusing heavily on the concrete drains but also on upgrading between the edge of the road and the curb wall,” he explained.
“Now, it’s mud all over the place, so most likely, these will be done with the concrete pavers so you’ll allow some vegetation to grow through but you’ll have hard surfaces throughout the city [for parking],” he added, noting that “we’re thinking about 10,000 parking spaces for people in Georgetown.”
“We can achieve this easily if we upgrade parapets on the road,” Jagdeo said, noting that this is part of the Peoples Progressive Party’s (PPP) plan for Georgetown.
He added that it is also part of the beautification plan for the city and would be extended countrywide.
