Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand has reported that Guyana recorded its best overall performance in this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, she noted that the overall pass rate has moved from 49% in 2024 to 63% in 2025.
“Guyana has done the best it has ever done and by far. We are not talking about a 2% here and a 1% there, We have moved the overall pass rate from 49% to 63% of our children in this country passing all the subjects. You know what that means, our children are doing better…we’re going to keep taking those prizes at CXC,” the Minister said.
As it relates to subjects, the pupils who wrote this year’s examination obtained a 69.25% pass rate in English Language when compared to 66.79% in 2024.
Social Studies recorded 64.7% pass rate compared to 62.88% in 2024 while Science recorded a pass rate of 63.7% this year when compared to 54% last year.
Finally, Mathematics saw an overall pass rate of 55.51% compared to 40.36% last year.
The Minister highlighted that the results are laudable given that the pupils who wrote this year’s NGSA missed two years of school due to COVID-19.
She alluded to several initiatives implemented including the school feeding programme, radio and television programmes, quizzes, increased school monitoring, increased teacher training, the National Grade Five Assessment, upgrading of several schools and the distribution of text books as some of the initiatives which contributed to making this a reality.
