Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, this morning, met with the newly appointed Minister of Oil, Gas & Environment of Suriname, Patrick Brunings.
Minister Bharrat was joined by Ministerial Advisor, Robeson Benn; Senior Petroleum Coordinator of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Bobby Gossai and the new Director of the Local Content Secretariat, Michael Munroe.
According to a brief statement from the ministry, the meeting was facilitated to discuss mutual areas of interest with regards to the natural resources sector, the importance of effective management to ensure the prosperous development and to discuss support for each other as neighbouring countries.
Earlier this month, Guyana and Suriname reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with Presidents Dr Irfaan Ali and Jennifer Geerlings-Simons pledging to accelerate cooperation in trade, energy, security and infrastructure development.
The two leaders had met in Nieuw Nickerie on Saturday, where they held extensive discussions on advancing joint economic opportunities and consolidating ties rooted in shared values, geographic proximity and cultural connections.
It was reported earlier this year that talks have commenced between Guyana and Suriname on the potential collaboration between the two neighbouring countries to jointly develop their respective natural gas resources.
Suriname is now forging ahead with its first offshore petroleum development project, which the Guyana Government had previously said opens up opportunities for the two nations to work together.
President Ali has always been touting a regional energy corridor as Guyana moves to monetise its gas resources.
President Ali has previously emphasised the need for Guyana and Suriname to work together on building out the infrastructure to support a joint gas project between the two South American neighbours.
Similar sentiments have been expressed by Annand Jagesar, Managing Director of Staatsolie, Suriname’s state-owned oil company.
