The government is exploring ways in which they can relocate commercial operations from residential communities, according to Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo.

During his press conference on Thursday, Jagdeo noted that a lot of people have workshops and other commercial operations in communities such as welding, spray painting and animal rearing.

“But right now communities are growing and people are intolerant to that sort of things,” he admitted, noting that during many of his outreaches, residents have complained of the disturbances and discomfort caused by these commercial operations in villages.

He noted too that many of these operators also indicated an interest to expand their businesses and move out of the communities.

Noting that a lot of these commercial operations were opened up in residential areas due to a lack of zoning, Jagdeo revealed that the government is now looking at addressing the situation.

He said the government is considering developing small parks in the backlands of villages where these small business owners can operate without impacting the tranquility of the neighbourhood.

“The time has come that we start exploring it,” Jagdeo said, as he recalled several of his outreaches on Sunday last where residents raised the issue.

“People mining sheep next door to a neighbour, that’s a major environmental problem, you can imagine the smell and stuff like that,” he noted.
