Police Sergeant Philbert Kendall, 45, was this morning charged with the murder of 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters.

He appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he was remanded to prison until May 9. Kendall is being represented by Attorney Patrice Henry.

On Monday, April 7, it was reported that a plain-clothes police officer allegedly shot and killed Peters in Linden.

The court was informed that on the day in question, Kendall – a subordinate officer at the Wismar Police Station – armed himself with a 9mm pistol and 15 live rounds and left in a private minibus.

After allegedly committing the act, the policeman allegedly took the victim to the Wismar Police Station and then the man was transported to the hospital for treatment, the court was further told.

Peters died whilst receiving medical treatment, the court was also informed.

Peters’ killing had led to widespread protest action in the mining town during which another man, 32-year-old Keon Fogenay, was allegedly shot dead by police.

A three-member team from the Caribbean’s Regional Security System (RSS) arrived in Guyana to support local investigations into the two shooting incidents.

President Dr Irfaan Ali had subsequently met with the grieving families, committing to not only cover the funeral expenses but also assuring that there will be an independent investigation into the two killings.
