A 27-year-old man was arrested on Monday after ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) intercepted more than 10 kilograms of foreign cannabis during an operation at Backstreet Grove, East Bank Demerara.

CANU said its officers acted on intelligence received and conducted an operation in the area, where they intercepted a man carrying a container.

A search of the container uncovered 15 brick-like parcels of foreign cannabis, commonly referred to as “poppy” or “creepy.”

The suspect of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara was arrested and taken to CANU Headquarters along with the narcotics.

According to CANU, the cannabis weighed 10.760 kilograms and has an estimated street value of approximately $7.5 million.

The agency noted that this type of cannabis is being imported into Guyana, contains a significantly higher THC content, and is sold at a premium price on the local market.

Investigations into the matter are continuing.
