Decomposed body found at Melanie Seawall; cause of death inconclusive – police

On September 08th, 2025 at about 11:00 hrs, the body of Christopher Andrew Sergeant, a Guyanese male of African descent, age 54 years, a driver employed at the Guyana Revenue Authority, was identified by his wife, Rosanna Phillips, a 66-year-old pensioner of Lot 544 9th Street, Dazzle Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, to be that of her husband. The identification was done in the presence of a Detective Sergeant and Government Pathologist, Doctor Nehaul Singh, at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.

Dr Singh performed a post-mortem examination with dissection on the body. Upon conclusion, the cause of death was found to be inconclusive due to the decomposed state of the remains. The body was thereafter handed over to the relatives for burial, with the date to be announced.

Christopher Sergeant’s body was found at about 17:00 hours on September 02nd, 2025, by a 17-year-old teenager from Non-Pariel, East Coast Demerara, who was riding his motorcycle proceeding east on the Melanie Seawall, when he observed a motionless body in a state of decomposition. He immediately alerted his neighbour, Brian Chin, a 61-year-old security consultant.

The matter was reported to the police via phone, and detectives visited the scene.

The body was discovered lying face upwards in a north-to-south position, clad in a white T-shirt, white vest, and blue long jeans. It appeared to be that of a male of African descent in an advanced state of decomposition. Both wrists and both insteps were missing, and the face was in a state of complete decomposition with bones exposed. The body was examined for marks of violence and none were observed.

The body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
