A 38-year-old cane harvester accused of raping a relative was on Tuesday granted $250,000 bail when he appeared before the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court.

Lookesh Daljit, also called “Willy”, of Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias on an indictable charge of rape.

It is alleged that on June 11, Daljit engaged in sexual penetration with a woman without her consent while in Region Five.

When the charge was read, he was not required to enter a plea.

According to the prosecution, the investigations have been completed, and the State is ready to proceed. The prosecution did not object to bail when the issue was raised.

Magistrate Matthias subsequently granted Daljit bail in the sum of $250,000 and ordered that he remain at least 50 feet away from the virtual complainant. The court warned that any breach of that order could result in his bail being revoked and him being remanded to custody pending the determination of the matter.

Daljit was also instructed to attend all future court hearings. The matter was adjourned to June 29.

It had been reported that the alleged incident occurred at the woman’s home in Berbice. The woman alleged that she was asleep when she awoke and discovered Daljit inside her room.

The alleged attack was subsequently reported to the Police, and an investigation was launched, leading to Daljit’s arrest and charge.
