The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports last evening launched the 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee Sports Tournaments at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, setting the stage for an exciting month of competition across the country.
Ten disciplines will take center stage throughout May, as part of the national Independence Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The ten sporting disciplines include: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Softball Cricket, Dominoes, Hockey, Table Tennis, Tennis, Squash, and Volleyball, with all participating organisations receiving financial assistance in the form of sponsorship to support their participation in the tournament.
At the event, remarks were delivered by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson, MP and Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport- Steven Jacobs, MP who underscored the importance of sport as a key pillar of Guyana’s 60th Independence celebrations.
Minister Ramson emphasised the significance of expanding each discipline as a pathway to national development, with plans to grow these tournaments annually and take them to communities across the country- especially with the development of world class facilites being done across regions.
He noted that while facilities are a major part of the development of the sports sector, what has been even more significant in achieving the progress seen today is the relationship the ministry maintains with all sporting organizations, which remains a key pillar of the sector’s continued growth.
Associations were encouraged to begin preparations for future editions as part of a long-term vision for sport.
The finals for all tournaments will be live streamed on the Ministry’s platforms, reinforcing its commitment to advancing sport and ensuring it remains central to Guyana’s national development.
