A 15-year-old secondary school student is in police custody following the killing of a 55-year-old fisherman at Dukestown, Corriverton, on Wednesday night.
Dead is Asmat Mohamed Hussain, of Lot 23 Dukestown, Corriverton, Corentyne, Berbice.
Police said the alleged murder occurred at about 21:00h in the vicinity of a supermarket at Dukestown. The teenage suspect, who is from the No. 77 Housing Scheme, Corriverton, was subsequently taken into custody and is assisting investigators.
Hussain’s brother, who was nearby when the incident occurred, recalled seeing his sibling on the ground bleeding.
He said he had earlier returned from work and was spending time with relatives, including Hussain, but did not realise when his brother left to go to a nearby Chinese supermarket.
“My brother was along with them. I don’t know when he left from going to the Chinese supermarket,” he recalled.
According to the brother, it was only moments later that the situation changed dramatically.
“By the time I turned, my brother was on the ground, bleeding through his nose,” he said.
The brother alleged that the teenager had a blade and attempted to escape from the scene. He said he intervened during the ensuing confrontation, but the teenager managed to get away.
His immediate concern then shifted to his injured brother.
“I ran to the nearest restaurant. I picked up my brother,” he recalled, explaining that he subsequently rushed Hussain to hospital.
The brother said the events of Wednesday night have left him deeply shaken.
“Gosh. I can never forget that,” he said.
Police have not yet disclosed the circumstances which allegedly led to the confrontation or the nature of the injuries Hussain sustained.
The Guyana Police Force, in its initial statement on the killing, identified the suspect only as a 15-year-old male secondary school student.
Investigations are continuing.
