Customs officers of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Wednesday intercepted some 36lbs of marijuana in barrels at the Laparkan Cargo Shed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

It was an intelligence-led operation, CANU has revealed.

Acting on information received, the officers searched two incoming barrels from the United States of America (USA), which led to the discovery of several transparent parcels containing a quantity of foreign cannabis. The quantity of foreign cannabis was subsequently escorted to CANU’s Headquarters, which weighed 16.4 kilograms.

CANU officers, whilst conducting a follow-up investigation at North East La Penitence Georgetown, searched a residence, which led to the discovery of a black garbage bag containing several packets of foreign zip-lock bags, small plastic containers used to package cannabis, and rolling paper.

The items were confiscated, and two persons are in custody assisting with investigations.
