Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Dr Irfaan Ali, has reaffirmed the commitment to defend Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty against all threats.

He was at the time addressing soldiers of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) who are stationed in Essequibo – a region that represents two-thirds of Guyana’s landmass and is being threatened by neighbouring Venezuela with planned elections on May 25.

“I’m here in Essequibo, where we will ensure we do everything so that the peaceful nature of our country, every square inch of our country, will continue to be the order of the day,” the Head of State declared before joining the troops for breakfast.

The Commander-in-Chief went on to praise the soldiers for their selfless bravery and sacrifices to be on the frontlines and defend Guyana’s territory.

“Our distinguished men and women in uniform today, once again, I have this extraordinary opportunity to be with… men and women who selflessly adorn themselves with this beautiful uniform, demonstrating and showcasing their unshakable and relentless, not only motivation, but their relentless understanding of the reason they wear this uniform, and their selfless motive in defense of every square inch of our country.”

“And today, as your Commander-in-Chief, on behalf of a grateful nation, I once again salute all of you for your bravery, your sacrifice and your unshakable commitment to nationhood. And whilst you are on the front line in uniform, I want to assure you that behind you on every single line [and] in the blood of every Guyanese is the readiness to support any and every effort necessary to ensure those that seek to destabilize the peace in our region, those that seek seek to threaten us, if they become ambitious, and if they become excursionary, we, together, as a people, which do on the front line, are ready In defense of every square inch of our country,” the Guyanese Leader noted.

President Ali further reassured the GDF ranks of his government’s full support, love and respect for everything they do in the name of nationhood.

“I know of our troops who will be at different locations at our borders, under different circumstances and challenges, but they do so with pride, they do so with honour, and they do so with dignity, knowing their cause is much larger than their posting… So to all of you, we want you to know that your service is not only something personal, your service is national. Your service is patriotic. Your service is marked with the pride of the ultimate definition of who you are as Guyanese,” the Head of State posited.
