A man, who was wanted for murder and had been in hiding for some 17 months, was hauled before the courts today to answer to the crime.

But in addition to the murder charge, the accused was slapped with a 51-month jail sentence which was handed down in absentia whilst he was on the run; the charge was for felonious wounding.

The accused is also committed to stand trial in the High Court for rape and has pending charges in the court system against him for various offences.

Nicholas Johnson, a 25-year-old heavy-duty machine operator, was not required to plead to the charge of murder when he appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Springlands Magistrate Court today.

It is alleged that of February 20, 2024 at Number 53 Village, Corentyne, he murdered Colene Toney.

Johnson, who is being represented by Attorneys Chandra Sohan and Adrian Annamayya, was remanded to prison and the case transferred to the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court; it comes up again on August 27.

Meanwhile, after being placed in custody, police notified Johnson that in his absence, he was sentenced to a 51-month jail-term for felonious wounding committed on Andrea Greaves. That sentence was imposed by Magistrate Robindranauth Singh.

Johnson is also committed by Magistrate Renita Singh to stand trial in the High Court for rape.

He was also charged for causing bodily harm by reckless driving and is facing charges for various assault matters.

On July 23, the wanted fugitive had turned himself over to law enforcement officers in the company of his lawyer.
