football[www.inewsguyana.com] – Slingerz Football FC added a bit of spark to the Guyana Festival with a 2-1 victory over the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Saturday evening at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Dubbed the evening of sport, the festival showcased Guyana’s two most popular sports in Cricket and Football.

The game started at a frantic pace as both teams searched for early opportunities that left the semi packed stadium gasping at every missed or failed attempt at goal.

However, Slingerz would strike first with a brilliant play that started in the midfield and ended with a right footed shot from Dominic Garnett that rocked the back of GDF’s net in the 26th minute to put side in their traditional orange and black colours into the lead.

A few moments later, Slingerz would pounce again on the GDF men that seemed a bit lackluster after the first goal with yet another brilliant strike from Garnett in the 40th minute to take a commanding 2-0 lead heading into the half time break.DSC_8489

On resumption, Slingerz switched their approach to game with a more defensive style of play that would only frustrate the GDF men more which resulted in Selwyn Isaacs being red carded for GDF in the 56th minute.

The military men, one man down found their way into the defence of Slingerz and drew celebrations from their supporters after Delwyn Fraser rocked the right side of the net in the 57th minute.

GDF would work assiduously for the equalizer but would fail to add to their tally as the full time expired, resulting in celebration for Slingerz to cap off the evening of sport at the festival.
