Pregnant woman remanded for Marijuana possession

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Twenty – One – year – old Shellon Hopkinson was remanded to Prison earlier this week by Magistrate Judy Latchman for the illegal possession of marijuana.

The pregnant woman of Middle Street, McDoom, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on August 22 at McDoom, she had in her possession 257 grammes of cannabis –sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor, Joel Ricknauth told the Court that on the day in question, acting on information, Police conducted a search at the defendant’s home, when they found the illegal substance in a bedroom that the accused and her son occupy. 

Hopkinson was represented by Attorney – at – Law, George Thomas, who informed the Court that she is two months pregnant and lives with her child father and four other persons in the house.

The Lawyer also alleged that his client was handcuffed and brutalized by the Police even though she is pregnant.

Meanwhile, the Prosecutor did not object to bail but requested that the defendant be placed on a substantial amount.

Bail was refused and case will call again on September 18.
