The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has achieved the dream of its founding members to unite Guyana, says executive member Anil Nandlall.

This, he said, is reflective in the diversity of the crowd at the party’s campaign launch on Sunday.

Uniting the peoples of this country, Nandlall explained, has been a dream of the PPP’s founders Cheddi and Janet Jagan.

“I saw Guyana reflected in that crowd, I saw every race reflected in that crowd in large numbers and that is why I am proud to say that no one can now seriously doubt that the People’s Progressive Party is the only national party in this country,” Nandlall said during his weekly programme ‘Issues in the News’ on Tuesday.

“I can say with deep pride that this generation of political leaders of the PPP headed by the General Secretary has managed to deliver a dream of Cheddi and Janet Jagan, we have been able to deliver on a foundational principle of the PPP, that is, to forge national, racial and ethnic and class unity in this country,” he added.

Thousands showed up at Kitty, Georgetown on Sunday to witness the launch of the party’s campaign for the 2025 General and Regional Elections.

“I saw thousands of persons who supported other political parties over the years there, I saw persons who I’ve never seen at political rallies there and they were as energised as the most loyal PPP supporters,” Nandlall said.

He explained that this ability to bring people together is as a result of the party not only achieving but surpassing its manifesto promises made in 2020.

Many of those supporters also showed up on Monday, July 14 to join the party’s march to the Umana Yana as it submitted its candidates’ lists for Nominations Day.

The lists, he pointed out, also reflect the diversity of the party.

“You have from the professional class, you have from the rice farmers, sugar workers, ordinary office staff, housewives, you have the business community, you have miners, you have teachers, public officers, you have construction workers…in terms of gender balance we more than satisfy the one-third percent or one-third female requirement on the list,” Nandlall, who is also the country’s Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, said.

On Wednesday night, Nandlall hosted a public meeting at Melanie Damishana on the East Coast of Demerara.

In a Facebook post, he highlighted that “gone are the days when we were unable to hold a political public meeting in that village and certainly not at elections time.”

Nandlall noted that the community welcomed and embraced the PPP.

Meanwhile, to supporters of the party, he urged them to attend community meetings and future rallies as well as ensure people turn out to vote on September 1.

Voter turnout in the last elections stood at 70.24% according to the Guyana Elections Commission.

PPP General Secretary Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has urged supporters not to be complacent, reminding that this massive support being shown for the party needs to translate to votes in order for the development of the country to continue.
