The future of Guyana requires a serious leader supported by an experienced team, according to General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, who on Thursday noted that no other party has such leadership.

“These elections are not about taking risks or joking around, they’re about the future of Guyana, and only a leader supported by a solid team that has demonstrated competency and achievement can lead this country into a glorious, prosperous future that awaits all Guyanese,” he said during his weekly press conference.

As parties prepare for the 2025 General and Regional Elections, he noted that President Dr. Irfaan Ali possesses the knowledge, experience and ability to continue in his position.

“We have Dr. Irfaan Ali who has been our President for many years and will be our Presidential Candidate, who has had a wealth of experience as a Minister of Government in a massive portfolio that has delivered enormous benefits to the people of this country,” he outlined.

“If you’re an unbiased person in this country, you will see that there is only one political party in this country that has that leadership that operates on the basis of achievement for the people of our country,” Jagdeo added.

Referring to his main contestants for office, Jagdeo noted that the Peoples National Congress/A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change are “still putting out childish flyers that have no connection with the economic reality of the country.”

He referred to plans by the APNU to make the University of Guyana free when this was already implemented by the PPP in January 2025.

“Who will believe a [Opposition Leader Aubrey] Norton or [AFC Leader] Nigel Hughes who have had a long track record of deceitful or dishonest statements,” he questioned, adding that [former President David] “Granger was much more credible than Norton and Nigel Hughes, separately and combined.”

The PPP General Secretary also pointed out that the parties have not released any promising ideas.

“They’re dangerous for this country. Dangerous for democracy but also dangerous for economic progress,” he emphasised.

Meanwhile, Jagdeo noted that Prime Minister Mark Phillips will be returning as Ali’s running mate on the campaign trail.

So far, the PPP has received endorsements from individuals across the political divide including former PNC executive and son-in-law of Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, Dr Richard Van West Charles.

Leader and founder of the Liberty and Justice Party Lenox Shuman as well as founding member of The Citizenship Initiative Shaz Ally have also endorsed President Ali for a second term.

PNC’s Daniel Seeram – who is currently serving as Regional Chairman for Region Four – has also backed the PPP.
