Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips, has welcomed ENet’s plans to expand solar energy access across Guyana, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to private-sector participation in the development of a more reliable, affordable and diversified energy sector.
The Prime Minister made the remarks today at the launch of the EcoFlow OCEAN Pro Solar Battery System, introduced through a partnership involving ENet, EcoFlow and TechPro.
“The government of Guyana welcomes ENet’s stated ambition to support the rollout of 50 megawatts of solar capacity through grid-tied and off-grid installations, with the aim of reaching approximately 10,000 households across Guyana.”
He noted that achieving this long-term target would depend on sustained investment and consumer confidence, particularly as Guyana’s expanding residential and commercial developments continue to increase electricity demand.
PM Phillips explained that the Government is addressing this demand through investments in additional generating capacity, solar energy, hydropower and electricity infrastructure, while encouraging private-sector contributions to the country’s energy transition.
Referencing Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy, he said “We intend to use our resources to improve lives while continuing to invest in cleaner power sources. Partnerships like the one represented here today can help achieve that objective.”
The newly launched EcoFlow OCEAN Pro system combines solar generation with battery storage, allowing households and businesses to store electricity for later use and potentially maintain backup power during outages.
Prime Minister Phillips also highlighted Guyana Power and Light’s net-billing programme, which allows eligible customers with approved grid-tied solar systems to export excess electricity to the national grid and receive credits on their electricity bills, subject to technical and safety requirements.
Addressing affordability, he welcomed ENet’s engagement with financial institutions to explore financing options, including the possibility of incorporating solar installation costs into existing mortgages.
He further encouraged the partners to invest in training Guyanese technicians and strengthening customer support to build local expertise and consumer confidence.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips also acknowledged ENet’s introduction of a digital platform designed to help customers assess their electricity consumption, determine suitable system sizes and obtain estimated pricing.
He congratulated ENet, EcoFlow and TechPro on the initiative and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting practical energy solutions that meet the needs of Guyana’s growing economy.
Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), Dr. Mahender Sharma, CEO of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), Dr. Mahender Sharma, Representatives of ENet, EcoFlow and TechPro, along with members of the private sector and financial institutions, were among those in attendance.
