Among the items lost were two beds, a refrigerator, microwave, washing machine and two electric bicycles.
Jaglall ived in the house with his wife, 26-year-old Shivani Kalichand, and their children, age 8 and 3.
He said the family was away from the house when the fire started and that he was unable to determine what caused it.
The family is now temporarily staying with Jaglall’s mother.
Kalichand, a daycare attendant at Ithaca Daycare, said she received a telephone call informing her that their home was on fire.
She explained that she and her husband had worked and saved to acquire their belongings and must now start over.
Meanwhile, Jaglall’s mother, Surujdai Juglall, who lived next door, also suffered losses as a result of the fire. The heat from the blaze damaged windows at her neighbouring home and affected chickens she was rearing for sale. Her poultry losses are estimated at about $250,000.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. An investigation has been launched by the Guyana Fire Service.
